What is the Pinnacle Peak known for?
Pinnacle Peak in Scottsdale stands at 3,169 feet and is a prominent feature in the Sonoran Desert. The park is home to the 3.5-mile Pinnacle Peak Trail, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and desert vegetation.
The area has a rich history, from being used by the Hohokam people for hunting to later attracting settlers for ranching and mining. Pinnacle Peak Park, established by the City of Scottsdale, is the area’s main attraction today.
Visitors to Pinnacle Peak Park can also enjoy wildlife watching. The area is home to a variety of creatures, such as bobcats, coyotes, javelinas, and even the occasional Gila monster and rattlesnake.
In addition to hiking, experienced climbers can take on the rock climbing routes on Pinnacle Peak itself. The park also offers picnic tables and interpretive displays along the trails for those seeking a more relaxed visit.
Best Time to Go to Pinnacle Peak
Pinnacle Peak is best visited during the spring and fall months, from October to May, when the weather is mild, and hiking conditions are comfortable.
Even during the spring and fall, it’s crucial to be mindful of the desert sun and start your hike early in the morning.
From June to September, summer in Arizona is extremely hot, with temperatures soaring well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, making hiking Pinnacle Peak not recommended.
How to Get to Pinnacle Peak
1. Car
When driving to Pinnacle Peak, input “Pinnacle Peak Park” or the address “26802 N 102nd Way, Scottsdale, AZ” into your GPS. The drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is about 30 miles and takes roughly 38 minutes.
Arrive early for parking at the trailhead, as the lot can get crowded, especially on weekends. If the lot is full, consider using a navigation app with live traffic updates and consider alternative parking options in nearby neighborhoods.
2. Ridesharing Services
Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft provide convenient and comfortable transportation for reaching Pinnacle Peak. Given that cell service might be limited at the trailhead, scheduling a pick-up before starting your hike is advised.
3. Bus
Route 44, operated by Valley Metro, connects Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to the intersection of Deer Valley Road and Happy Valley Road. Depending on traffic, the bus ride can take up to one hour, and schedules may be less frequent on weekends.
While this option is budget-friendly, it may be less convenient due to limited schedules and potential waits for connecting rides. To track the bus in real time and plan your trip, consider downloading the Valley Metro app for convenience and up-to-date information.
Quick Tips for Your Visit to Pinnacle Peak
Bring plenty of water. Bring at least two liters of water per person for your hike. It’s better to have extra water than run out on the trail. There are no water fountains along the trail, so plan accordingly. Start your hike early. The cooler temperatures make the climb more comfortable and reduce the risk of heat exhaustion. Additionally, starting early allows you to avoid the crowds and enjoy the stunning desert views at your own pace. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Protecting yourself from the sun is essential for a safe and enjoyable hike. Pack sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every two hours. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses shield you from harmful UV rays as well. |
