I was out with my international friend one afternoon when she suddenly started breaking out in some kind of allergy. 

My first instinct was to tell her to see a doctor right away. She waved me off and said, “Back home, my mom just gives me Chinese herbs for this.” 

The problem was… her mom was an ocean away, and she had no idea where to find anything similar in Phoenix.

So instead of arguing with her, I decided to help. She asked me to look for proper Chinese herb shops in the area, not random bottles off a supermarket shelf. 

That turned into me reading labels, asking awkwardly specific questions about ingredients, and checking which places felt knowledgeable and trustworthy.

She eventually found the herbs she was looking for in a shop we both felt good about. I didn’t want all that effort to go to waste, so I’m sharing the Chinese herb shops in Phoenix that even my friend’s very particular mom would be okay with.

These early experiences, especially watching her father prepare Tie Guan Yin oolong with care and intention, clearly continue to influence everything Sonya Market stands for today.

After immigrating to the United States as a teenager, Sonya faced significant challenges—learning English, supporting her family, and adapting to a new culture. Years later, while raising three children and navigating life as a stay-at-home mother, she never lost sight of her desire to build something meaningful of her own.

That purpose became even clearer during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Sonya experienced a severe illness and turned to natural healing methods, including Chinese herbs, teas, nourishing foods, meditation, and deep self-awareness. Her recovery marked a turning point and laid the foundation for the wellness-focused philosophy behind Sonya Market.

Launched online in 2021 with the support of her husband, Joseph, Sonya Market began by serving the community through carefully sourced teas, herbs, and health products. Their willingness to accept EBT and OTC payments reflects a genuine commitment to accessibility. As the business grew, Sonya Market expanded into a physical retail location, offering customers a welcoming space grounded in trust and experience.

After training under a tea trader from Fujian, China—whose family has over a century of tea expertise—Sonya began hosting tea tastings rooted in Gong Fu tea practices. More than a typical herb shop, Mount Sunny is a wellness and acupuncture studio inspired by traditional Chinese medicine. We really liked how you can get a cupping or massage, which adds personalization and value to the whole experience.

As for the products, there’s a good range of herbal tinctures and wellness items, like oils, body blends, and gua sha (smooth-edged tools for skin scraping) to explore. 

Shopping is also made enjoyable by the approachable and knowledgeable staff. A couple of visitors shared with us that since they aren’t familiar with the products, chatting with the team made them feel like they were asking a friend for advice.

What’s even better is that the store sits in a central spot, so you can pair your visit with a nearby cafe stop or quick errands around town.

That said, you have to book an appointment here. They’re apparently not a standard walk-in store, so you can’t purchase herbs without getting a service.

Despite the very literal name, Chinese Medicine Herb has become a go-to for locals who want real medicinal herbs instead of the usual vitamins-and-supplements mix in other health shops.

Their shelves carry more than 275 patented herbal formulas in both powder and pill form. We’re also a big fan of their online shop, especially since they reply and ship quickly, though a few customers mentioned receiving the wrong items in their orders.

For anyone new to Chinese herbs, going in person helps a lot. The shop is downtown, close enough to reach by car and public transport.

Inside, the bright, organised layout makes it easier to navigate, and the Chinese staff really know their formulas. They’ll actually talk through what each product is for and help you choose something that fits your needs.

With over 350 items in stock, Green Goddess House of Herbs is one of the herbal stores with the widest selection in the city. We believe it’s one of the best places to shop in bulk, and if you’re looking for remedies, teas, and spices. 

Regardless of the long ingredient list, the space itself feels pretty relaxed. There’s a cosy, slightly old-school atmosphere and a strong herbal scent that regulars say they’ve grown to love. 

Lots of customers also mention they first drop by simply because it’s conveniently located near central Phoenix, but it’s meeting Sue that really convinces them to come back and trust the shop more long-term. 

She’s usually very patient, helping people understand and find what they need. However, the rest of the staff can have off days too. While customers usually like their shop interactions, there were mixed experiences with their friendliness.

Essentia Herbs is a branded herbal product line by Dr. Jing Liu, PhD, LAc, OMD, with over 3 decades of industry experience. Unlike smaller clinics with hundreds of dried herbs for custom prescriptions, they sell their own branded formulations.

These ready-to-use blends in capsules or packs are often easier to consume, instead of the customers mixing them on their own.

If you’re worried about choosing, the staff is used to first-timers. People we interviewed describe them as kind and helpful, especially when asked how certain products work. 

We think that makes it worth the 30-minute drive from central Phoenix, as the store is in Scottsdale. Being a small and clean space with parking also makes visits easier.

But while they provide well-liked formulas, they don’t carry a wide range of bulk raw herbs. If you want personalized mixes, your options are limited.
