Pros
- Provides low-impact workout plans to avoid injuries
- Any fitness level is welcome
- Affordable rates
Cons
- Slots for personal training easily gets filled up
- Relatively smaller gym
One of the most referred personal trainers in Phoenix is Seth Thurston. In 2009, he founded Thurston Personal Training and has since helped hundreds of fitness newbies and experts.
He’s an award-winning physique competitor and brings over 15 years of experience to the table. He has worked with athletes, models, beauty queens, and more.
Don’t let that intimidate you, though, if you’re just starting out your journey. We hear that he’s very welcoming to any client regardless of their fitness level.
The unique thing about his program is that it was designed around low-impact workouts to encourage fat loss and build muscle in a safe manner. This helps prevent injuries such as sprains or muscle tears.
Upon assessment, he’ll customize a regimen specific to your needs and goals – this includes weights, cardio training, meal planning, body tracking, and more.
What he does is modify exercises or scale the level of difficulty, depending on his assessment. We think this is a great way to help beginners or even advanced clients get the results they’re aiming for.
We appreciate that Seth is known for being warm, approachable, and attentive to his clients. It seems that he truly balances out professionalism and fun when it comes to his workout plans.
He’s also very responsive and is keen on checking up on his clients. It shows that he cares and tracks their progress.
However, since their gym is relatively small, they only accept a few clients at a time. This is also why he looks for dedicated clients willing to put in the work, too.
It’s not entirely negative though, as some clients prefer smaller, non-intimidating places to work out at.

Pros
- Fully-equipped boutique gym with a cool vibe
- All-day group and personal sessions are available
Cons
- Closed on weekends
- Rates are on the pricier side
North Valley Personal Training is a boutique gym that’s known to provide personal training and private group sessions.
The studio may be small, but it’s equipped with the latest fitness machines (some of which you wouldn’t even find at big box gyms) for all workout styles. This adds an exclusive touch – something that their members appreciate.
Their certified personal trainer, Chris Turner, is dedicated to helping his clients reach their fitness goals. We like the fact that he’s totally hands-on and is available for many training times throughout the day.
Most of his clients appreciate that he makes working out enjoyable and something to look forward to. Apparently, even his group training sessions feel like individual one-one-one training because he’s very attentive to everyone in class.
When it comes to personal training, his approach is quite simple. Like most, he’ll do a complete assessment and create a tailor-fit workout and nutrition plan for his clients.
Relatively speaking, there’s nothing new with the workout regimen he prepares. However, it’s his attitude that makes all the difference.
What his clients love about him is his cheerful and caring demeanor. He’s incredibly motivating and keeps them challenged with different sets of workouts.
We also hear that he keeps a positive environment with an awesome energy. People feel comfortable coming to the gym because of this.
The only downside is they’re closed on weekends. Not everyone can make time on weekdays, but that’s just a minor issue we can overlook.

Pros
- Specializes in the Five Point Fitness approach
- Upscale gym environment
- Fun micro-group training sessions
Cons
- Short business hours
- Relatively more expensive rates
For a holistic approach to fitness, Pamela Young is one of your best bets. She has more than 15 years of experience as a personal trainer and is a certified fitness expert through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
She founded Pamela Young Fitness – an upscale gym catering to group and individual fitness programs, as well as corrective exercises.
Pamela specializes in the Five Point Fitness method which focuses on the five critical tenants of fitness which include strength, flexibility, balance, core, and endurance.
All of these challenges clients to scale their limits after each session. It also trains the body to adapt changes, preventing injuries and strengthening the body’s major muscle groups.
When it comes to personal training, Pamela’s approach takes into account health history, body fat composition, and goals. Afterwards, she’ll create micro groups (around 2-3 people) that incorporate the needs of every individual.
She does this because she prefers to assist clients as a group. It’s her belief that group sessions are much more effective since people tend to encourage one another and build good rapport.
But if you’re more comfortable with one-on-one training, you can request it. They just strongly recommend having accountability buddies when working on your fitness journey.

Pros
- Large gym with wide variety of equipment
- Relatively affordable rates
- Flexible training hours
Cons
- Closed on Sundays
- Machines are not as updated as other gyms
Underground Fitness is one of the more well-known gyms around Phoenix. They’re dedicated to providing high-quality personal training, fitness classes, and nutrition coaching to all their clients.
They’re a large gym with a wide variety of equipment to choose from. It’s great because even though a large group of people are around, it never feels crowded and you still get your own space.
David Bess is one of the trainers that their members love. Not only is he knowledgeable and friendly, he is also very conscious of his clients’ safety and their education on proper movement techniques.
We hear that he’s adept at challenging his clients, but not to the extent that they get frustrated. He’s also said to be patient, encouraging, and very professional.
What’s more is he’s easily reachable and checks in on his clients on a regular basis. We find this helpful for those who are keen on tracking their progress and receiving updates.
The personal training plan itself isn’t very unique, as he starts with the usual assessment and personalized fitness strategies. However, what we find helpful is the comprehensive coaching on nutrition and sustainable habits.
We think this helps set up clients for a balanced lifestyle both in and out of the gym. The proper mindset is extremely important in fitness, after all.

Pros
- Non-intimidating environment for beginners
- Holistic fitness approach
- Short but comprehensive training sessions
Cons
- Closed on Sundays
- Gym is relatively small
TriFit Wellness is a boutique fitness studio that has been around since 2005. They call themselves “the gym for non-gym people” because they maintain an unpretentious and welcoming environment for newbies.
They also believe in a holistic approach when it comes to fitness. More than hustling at the gym, they encourage their members to live a healthier lifestyle beyond working out.
Steven Cianfarano, one of their personal trainers, is a firm believer of this, too. He pushes clients to take a look at all aspects of wellness including exercise, diet, and having the proper mindset.
He’s a NASM-certified trainer with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from Arizona State University. So as far as experts go, you’d be confident to trust his assessments and judgments.
We hear that he’s very welcoming to beginners and makes them feel comfortable. He guides them on forming good workout habits and creates fun routines to help them enjoy training.
The training programs are customized and last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. It’s short, but it targets the full body with strength, conditioning, and cardio.
It’s also modified not just to depend on one’s fitness level, but for their abilities as well. We find that it’s a good balance between challenging and encouraging.

Pros
- Home of the industry’s top personal trainers
- High quality instructors
- Client-focused
- Caters to a variety of fitness goals
Cons
- Operating hours unavailable on website
Mobile Trainers is a fitness company that’s working to revolutionize the personal training scene.
They work to meet the evolving needs of male and female enthusiasts in a time where convenient, on-demand services, and a germ-free workout environment is gaining more popularity and sought after.
We like that they bring the industry’s top personal trainers in Scottsdale to the homes of their clients.
We’re impressed by the standards they set for their trainers since they only hire less than 1% of the trainers who apply to be part of their team. This way, we know that they have a standard for their trainers so their clients can get the best of the best.
Speaking of their instructors, we recommend Justin, the Training Director and Cofounder of Mobile Trainers.
He’s dedicated his life to fitness and has been in the industry for around 15 years. He’s been a person trainer since he finished college and even became a Personal Training Director at LifeTime Fitness.
We like his dedication to fitness and especially to his clients. We’re in awe of his drive to help clients realize their potential and become their optimal selves.
Mobile Trainers is also great for whatever goal you have, whether it’s weight loss, strength training, corrective exercise and so on.
What to expect when you first avail of their personal training is a complimentary consultation, program recommendation, in-home training proper and monthly 3D body scans.
What we like about the 3D body scans is that it helps clients keep track of their progress.
We’ve heard of so many success stories from training with Mobile Trainers. We highly recommend!

Pros

- 100% progress guarantee
- Certified personal trainers
- Free body scans
Cons
- Operating hours unavailable on website
For those who are into personal training, but would like to be part of a small group, we recommend Todd Smith Fitness.
They’re one of the best small group personal training facilities in Phoenix. We like that they’re semiprivate because clients will not entirely be alone but won’t be part of big groups that can be intimidating.
They guarantee 100% progress with their program and we’re not surprised because they have at least two sessions weekly.
Clients will be guided by certified personal trainers who know exactly what they’re doing.
We like how they offer free body scans to help with progress tracking. We find it very helpful and vital for progress.
We also like the culture of the gym. It’s encouraging, comfortable and a joy to be part of which we think helps with motivation to go to the gym and workout.
