Piestewa Peak is the second-highest point in the Phoenix Mountains, reaching 2,610 feet (796 m). It was named in honor of Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa – the first Native American woman to die in combat during the Iraq War.

The Piestewa Peak Summit Trail is a challenging 1.2-mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,208 feet (368 m). It’s a popular trail and provides spectacular 360-degree views of the Phoenix metropolitan area from the summit.

The Piestewa Peak area also offers over 15 miles of interconnecting trails. The Freedom Trail is a moderately difficult 3.7-mile loop around the mountain’s base, while the Nature Trail is a 1.4-mile moderate loop showcasing the Sonoran Desert.

The Piestewa Peak Recreation Area has various flora and fauna typical of the lower Sonoran Desert, including saguaro and cholla cacti, trees like palo verde and ironwood, and many species of reptiles, birds, and mammals.
