Arizona Eye Specialists was established in 1953. The clinic has since grown to eight locations across the valley, but we’re partial to their Phoenix office.

For one, the clinic is spacious, clean, thoroughly sanitized, and bright. It’s not at all intimidating and you’ll often find yourself being greeted by the warmest reception staff.

They offer a full scope of ophthalmology care, alongside medical and surgical services. And if you need prescription glasses or contact lenses, they conveniently have an optical shop in the office.

Dr. Robert Brems is one of their patients’ well-loved ophthalmologists. He’s board-certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a former chairman of the eye health and safety organization, Prevent Blindness Arizona.

While he looks at a wide scope of eye cases, he has particular interests in LASIK, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, and cosmetic eye surgery.

His patients not only find him extremely professional, but personable as well. Apparently, he makes it a point to really get to know his patients and clearly explains the course of action to be done.

If you do decide to make an appointment with him, make sure to confirm and reconfirm your schedule. We’ve heard that some patients have experienced being double-booked that led to appointment cancellations or longer waiting times.

  • Makes himself available to his patients at all times
  • Open on Saturdays

Cons

  • Long waiting times even with confirmed appointments
  • Reports of reception staff being rude and dismissive

Eye Doctors of Arizona is a family-run local business. They’re well-known across the city simply because their doctors have built a reputation for being professional and reliable.

The clinic was founded by Dr. Warren Heller. When he retired, his sons, Dr. Matthew Heller and his brother became the main ophthalmologists.

Dr. Matt, as he is fondly called by his patients, is board-certified and treats all sorts of eye conditions. He commonly takes on cases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and dry eyes.

During his residency, he impressively received the Patrick Murray Academic Achievement Award from the American Osteopathic Colleges of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

What impresses us more, however, is his attitude towards his patients. He is known to be kind, compassionate, and is willing to go the extra mile just to give the best care possible.

He makes himself available to his patients at all times and doesn’t mind answering barrages of questions. And, he apparently has a great sense of humor that puts patients instantly at ease.

We have no qualms about their doctors, but we do hope they work on having a better scheduling system. It seems that a lot of patients often have to wait long, despite making an appointment.

Their reception staff is also not as accommodating as one would like. Some of them are apparently rude and downright dismissive.

  • Clinic is known to treat severe and difficult eye cases
  • Board-certified ophthalmologist that’s known to be an expert at nearly all surgical and non-surgical eye issues
  • Specializes in n treating and preventing the advancement of diabetes, glaucoma, dry eye, cataracts, and pterygium

Cons

  • Often has hiccups in their appointment system
  • Service fees are significantly more expensive
  • Closed on weekends

For patients who have been told that their condition is “untreatable”, Clear Vision Ophthalmology is a ray of hope and sunshine. This is because they specialize in treating severe and difficult eye cases.

They pride themselves in having the best of the best doctors that think outside the box. While there’s really no guarantee that a patient can be cured, they do guarantee that they’ll exhaust all options before giving up.

Not all eye doctors are as invested and willing to take on difficult cases, so we have to give them major props for this attitude. We really appreciate how they have their patients’ best interests at heart.

Among them is Dr. Corey Hochman, their medical director and a board-certified comprehensive ophthalmologist. This means that he’s an expert at treating nearly all surgical and non-surgical eye issues.

He’s often referred the most difficult cases. He specializes in treating and preventing the advancement of diabetes, glaucoma, dry eye, cataracts, and pterygium.

Since they’re a private practice, expect that their service fees are significantly more expensive. And for those prices, we’d expect no less than top notch customer service.

However, they often have hiccups within their system when appointments get lost. This is super frustrating to patients, so we hope they work on resolving this as soon as possible.

Here, they make use of advanced technology and all the latest techniques in the industry. They have a wide network of multi-specialty ophthalmologists and optometrists.

Suffice it to say, you’ll most likely find a doctor that specializes in any condition that you have.

Dr. Scott Perkins is among their top eye surgeons. He has done over 100,000 cataract surgeries, 15,000 LASIK procedures, and was the first to use the Toric ICL and PanOptix Trifocal IOL in the Southwest US.

He’s also a board-certified ophthalmologist and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

As one of the founding members of their practice, one of his main goals is to have every patient feel respected and comfortable in their clinic. And from what we’ve heard, he has succeeded in doing so.

Apparently, Dr. Perkins is a kind fellow who treats every patient equally and with the same amount of care. He makes sure that they feel well taken care of and often follows up on their progress.

His schedule gets pretty full quickly so make sure to book at least a week or two in advance. If you’re not really in a rush, we think he’d be a solid choice for an ophthalmologist.

When it comes to cornea and refractive surgery, one of your best bets is Phoenician Eye Specialists. Their main provider, Dr. Achal Patel, is known to be the expert at these treatments.

Even though they specialize in these, they’re also able to treat a good scope of eye conditions. Just recently, they’ve added a TempSure device in their practice to provide a much more comprehensive approach to eye care.

Dr. Patel is a Phoenix native. He is certified to perform laser cataract procedures and ORA intraoperative aberrometry.

Throughout his career, he has done hundreds of corneal transplant procedures and has extensive experience in the management of ocular trauma. He’s well-loved among the local community not just for his expertise, but for his kind demeanor as well.

Another thing we really love about his practice is its almost hotel-like ambience. It’s hard not to be impressed by how modern and sleek everything is.

Customer service is also ace. The reception staff are obviously knowledgeable and trained to answer patient inquiries.

Note that their services are relatively more expensive. Considering Dr. Patel’s expertise and the customer service, however, we do think they’re worth the investment.
