Pros
- A well-known custom closet establishment
- Known for good customer service
- Four distinct closet systems designed around various clients’ needs
- Relatively affordable rates
Cons
- Options are limited to walk-in closets and reach-in closets
- Basic materials used
- Long waiting time for install to begin
Closet By Design has been around since 1982. And since then, they have grown to over 50 locations across the United States.
Suffice to say, they’re a well-known closet customization establishment with a wide clientele – a telltale sign of good customer service. Thankfully, their Phoenix location is no exception.
What we like about them is that they provide custom-tailored designs that won’t break the bank. Their rates are relatively more affordable, considering the craftsmanship they showcase in every project.
Clients are limited to choose between a walk-in closet or a reach-in closet. Both, however, offer four distinct closet systems designed around your lifestyle that can still be customized, should you decide to do so.
The most basic one is their Everyday Collection which offers a sleek solution to closet clutter. It’s also their most affordable design and includes straight-edge panels, adjustable shelves, and half-overlay flat face doors.
Rapidly gaining popularity is their Brio Collection, which adds a rustic oomph to any wardrobe. The main selling point here is that it mimics the look and feel of cypress and fir, sans the premium price tag of real wood.
Unfortunately, it seems that a common issue with them is that there’s a long waiting time for the install to begin. For some, the build begins four months after signing a contract.
It’s good, though, that clients say they’re worth the wait. For those with limited budgets looking to update their closet designs, we think they’re a solid choice.

Pros
- Family-run and -operated business
- Extensive gallery of designs and closet systems to choose from
- Designs are available for viewing on the website
- Fair pricing and competitive rates
Cons
- Long waiting time for design proposals and revisions
- Not as responsive through phone or email inquiries
Austin-Morgan Closets is the brainchild of Cliff and Gina Niethe, a married couple who loves home renovations. They started the company just 6 years ago, but they’ve already made a name for themselves in the cabinetry industry.
As a family-owned and -operated company, we appreciate that they treat every project as an extension of their own homes. That being said, they’re known to be perfectionists and adept problem solvers.
They claim to offer the most extensive line of custom closet systems in Arizona. Clients can pick among a diverse gallery of designs – from the most basic to the more complex ones.
This applies to reach-in, suspended, floor-based, combination, and any other type of closet that a client prefers.
The designs are readily-available for viewing on their website, too, which we find extremely helpful for those who are canvassing. It just gives a better idea whether or not they’ll be a good fit to work with each other.
We also find that their rates are fairly-competitive and reasonable for the quality of materials they use – all of which are made in the US.
If you do decide to work with them, expect a bit of wait as we’ve heard that they take their time drafting the designs. This is apparently more evident when you have revisions to their proposal.
They’re a small team wearing many hats, so there can also be delays in responses through email and phone inquiries.

Pros
- Fully-licensed, bonded, and insured
- A+ Better Business Bureau rating
- Family-run business that has done over 45,000 installations across the valley
- Specializes in closet makeovers and major renovations
- Locally-sourced sustainable materials
- Relatively affordable rates
Cons
- Basic closet features; nothing proprietary or unique
- Reports of delays in the design and build process
- Closed on weekends
For space-saving and closet solutions, one of your best bets would be Space Solutions. We find their name apt and fitting, as it’s what they do best.
They’re a fully-licensed, bonded, and insured company who’s a proud member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating.
They’re also a family-owned local business that has installed their products in over 45,000 homes across the valley. So as far as closet experts go, they’re the real deal.
Their team of design experts are adept at offering elegant and luxurious solutions to elevate your space. Sure, they do simple renovations, but it seems that they’re more fond of complete closet makeovers.
It appears that clients love their collaborative work nature, as they’re completely hands-on and transparent in the design process.
While they mostly offer just the basic and industry-standard closet features, it’s the quality of craftsmanship that makes them stand out.
We also appreciate that they source sustainable materials that are locally-manufactured. This is probably why they’re able to lower their rates without compromising quality.
A common issue clients seem to encounter with them is meeting deadlines. Apparently, there are multiple cases where the design and build encounters delays.
So if you’re not exactly in a hurry, we think they’d be a great choice for when you need their services.

Pros
- Puts high priority on functionality and durability of materials
- Wide scope of options for overall closet designs and styles
- Fast and efficient design and build process
- Offers free in-home consultations with a dedicated designer
Cons
- Rates are relatively more expensive
- Closed on weekends
Another reliable and local expert at custom closets is Dream Closets. What we like about them is that they’re customer-centric – always working with the client’s vision in mind.
Their top priorities when it comes to closets are functionality and durability of materials used. From the most basic ones to the more elaborate wardrobes, they make sure that these two go hand-in-hand.
They only use professional grade materials and hardware to build a closet that fully utilizes the space without overcrowding or underwhelming – an issue that most customers seem to encounter with other similar companies.
They’re experts at creating walk-in, reach-in, and kids closets, as well as closet organizers. Clients are pleased to have a wide scope of options in color, materials, and styles of accessories.
We also love that they offer free in-home consultations where a dedicated designer will assess and suggest the best closet options for you.
During this time, they will also measure your space and create a 3D design for your appreciation, all in less than an hour.
After the final approval, they can start ordering the materials and install your closet in just 2-3 weeks. Simpler designs take shorter – as little as 1-2 days.
It’s their speed and efficiency the clients often commend them for. However, note that this quality of service also comes with a heftier price tag.

Pros
- Has been in the business for over a decade
- Works with functional and durable materials
- Wide scope of designs and closet accessories to choose from
- Offers free in-home consultations
Cons
- Takes long to send design proposals and revisions
- Closed on weekends
With over a decade of experience under their belt, Arizona Garage and Closet Design has built a loyal clientele among homeowners and business owners alike.
They work with all types of spaces – whether it’s small or large, even- or oddly-shaped – and create custom designs to meet clients’ needs, style preference, and budget.
Apart from the visual side of the process, they also make sure to take into account the durability of the build.
For starters, their cabinets are equipped with ¾-inch thermofused scratch-resistant melamine finish that’s able to withstand heat, moisture, and stains.
We also like the fact that these come in a variety of colors, designs and finishes, making it highly-customizable and personalized for every client.
Another thing we like is their large option pool of closet accessories and accents available. This allows for more creativity and functionality on the customer’s end.
From what we’ve heard, their staff is extremely helpful in providing clients insights on which styles and colors would work best for them. Apparently, even the installation technicians are friendly and professional.
One of the downsides with them, however, is that they take a while to send design proposals and the revisions to be done. Some clients also reported to have made several follow up calls.
