Honestly, Scottsdale surprised us in the best way! I thought it might just be a place for golf and spa lovers, but it turned out to be such a win for our whole family. Family activities in Scottsdale were literally everywhere we turned. 

We had everything from outdoor adventures that got us all moving to hands-on museums that even kept our youngest entertained.There’s truly something here for every age—and it felt like every day brought something new that we could all enjoy together. 

If you’re looking for a place that’ll keep everyone happy (and not glued to their screens), Scottsdale is definitely worth the trip. Here’s what we recommend for you to get ready for a family vacation you won’t forget!

1. Explore the Desert at McDowell Sonoran Preserve

If you’re looking to introduce kids to the wonders of the desert, McDowell Sonoran Preserve is the perfect place. 

With over 225 miles of trails, there’s something for every skill level, making it ideal for family exploration.The kids will love the chance to get out and explore, while you can enjoy the peaceful desert landscape.

I personally love the Bajada Nature Trail—it’s an easy walk with informative plaques that are perfect for young adventurers. Just be sure to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and of course, your camera to capture the wildlife and stunning desert views!

One of my favorite spots for a family day out is Butterfly Wonderland. It’s like stepping into a magical rainforest where thousands of butterflies are free to flutter around you. 

Besides the butterflies, the place also features a cool 3D movie, a honeybee exhibit, and even reptiles. To really get the best experience, I recommend going in the morning when the butterflies are the most active. The kids will love it!

It’s the perfect time for the kids to get up close and personal with these beautiful creatures—they’ll be absolutely fascinated!

Pro tip: Bring a small, lightweight stroller if you have younger kids—it makes navigating the exhibits easier and gives them a comfy spot to rest when they need a break from all the excitement!

3. Join the Hands-On Fun at the Arizona Science Center

The Arizona Science Center in Phoenix is a must-visit if you’re in the area. It’s just a short drive from Scottsdale and offers over 300 exhibits—plus a planetarium and an IMAX theater! 

My kids absolutely loved the “Forces of Nature” gallery where we could simulate earthquakes and tornadoes. There’s always something new to explore, so check out the rotating exhibits for added excitement.

It’s the perfect spot for a fun, hands-on learning experience that the whole family will enjoy!

Pro tip: If you’re visiting with younger kids, don’t forget to stop by the interactive play areas—they’re designed just for little ones and are a great way for them to burn off some energy while learning through play!

During the scorching Arizona summer, Big Surf Waterpark is a total lifesaver. My family always has a blast in the wave pool or zooming down the waterslides. 

It doesn’t matter if you’re in the mood to kick back and relax or get your adrenaline pumping, there’s something for everyone.Just don’t forget your water-friendly footwear to keep your feet comfortable as you hop from one splash zone to the next!

I definitely recommend arriving early to grab the best lounge chairs before the crowds roll in. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a full day of fun without the rush. And of course, don’t forget the sunscreen—you’ll need it while you’re soaking up all the fun in the sun!

OdySea Aquarium is an amazing experience for families. I love how it’s home to over 6,000 marine animals, from playful otters to giant sea turtles.

The rotating aquarium exhibit, the “OdySea Voyager,” is my favorite. It lets you see sea creatures up close, and the 360-degree views make you feel like you’re truly immersed in the ocean!

Then make it a full day of nature fun by pairing your visit with Butterfly Wonderland—it’s right in the same complex! You can start with the butterflies, then explore the aquarium or science exhibits. 

Pro tip: Don’t forget to check out the touch pools! They’re a great hands-on experience where the kids can interact with starfish, stingrays, and other sea creatures. It’s a fun and educational way to get up close with marine life!

8. Enjoy Interactive Play at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix

If you have young kids, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix is a must. My little ones absolutely loved the interactive exhibits, from climbing structures to art rooms. 

They could pretend to be chefs in the play kitchen or build structures with giant foam blocks. It’s a place where kids can get creative and have fun, and there are even toddler-friendly zones for the littlest visitors. 

Plus, there are tons of hands-on activities to keep them engaged, from water play areas to pretend shops where they can role-play being grown-ups!

9. Hike and Play at Pinnacle Peak Park

For an outdoor adventure, Pinnacle Peak Park offers scenic hikes and rock climbing. The trail is moderately challenging but very doable for kids, and the views of the Sonoran Desert are absolutely breathtaking. 

We love stopping by the visitor center to learn more about the local wildlife. If you plan to hike, be sure to bring plenty of water, and I recommend going in the morning or evening to avoid the midday heat.

Trust me, the cooler temps make a huge difference. And don’t forget your camera—there are plenty of amazing photo ops along the way!

Pro tip: Don’t forget to take some time at the visitor center to ask about any wildlife you might see. It adds a fun, educational twist to the hike!

10. Reach New Heights at Gravity Extreme Zone

The kids will have a blast, and parents can either join in on the fun or kick back and relax while watching. 

 It’s a great way to let the kids play while parents can join in or relax. Plus, if you’re visiting with a big family, check for group rates or weekday specials to make it even more affordable.
