What is Hayden Butte known for?

Hayden Butte, also known as Tempe Butte or “A” Mountain, is a prominent landmark in Tempe, Arizona. It’s known for its distinctive shape, resulting from tilted strata and millennia of erosion.

Hayden Butte is an andesite butte of volcanic origin, standing at 1,495 feet (456 m) in elevation. Its slopes feature interesting geological formations, including soft sediment deformation, graded bedding, and kink folds.

It was named after Charles Trumbull Hayden, who established a ferry crossing and flour mill at its base in the late 1800s.

The butte has a long history of human habitation, with evidence of Hohokam settlements dating back to A.D. 750 and 1450. The Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community considers the butte a sacred place.

On top of the mountain, the letters “ASU” were placed for Arizona State University. Installed in 1938, the letter symbolizes ASU’s identity and pride.

Each year, the tradition of painting the “A” white at the beginning of the academic year signifies a fresh start for incoming students. At the same time, the letter is repainted gold before home football games.

The butte is also home to ASU’s Sun Devil Stadium, built in the saddle between the two peaks.

Hayden Butte is a popular hiking destination. The summit offers panoramic views of Tempe, Arizona State University, and the surrounding mountains, making it a perfect spot for photography and relaxation.

In 2002, the City of Tempe designated Hayden Butte as a preserve to protect its historical, cultural, and environmental significance. The city has implemented measures to restore damaged areas and educate visitors on responsible use of the preserve.
