Top 5 Gastroenterologists in Phoenix

Top 5 Gastroenterologists in Phoenix

How We Chose the Best Gastroenterologists in Phoenix

Credentials

It was vital for us to consider only licensed and certified physicians. Any awards or recognitions they had were a bonus.

Bedside Manners

This was a non-negotiable for us. We looked into these doctors’ demeanors as we think it’s important for patients to work with pleasant physicians.

Availability

We understand that some patients need urgent care or live very busy lives. So, we took into account the availability of these doctors when it came to their business hours and schedule.

Customer Service

Apart from the physicians themselves, we also looked into how accommodating and responsive their staff members were.

Pros

  • Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Internal Medicine
  • Wide scope of specialities
  • Known to be compassionate, understanding, and easy to work with
  • Accepts most insurance providers

Cons

  • Relatively more expensive service fee
  • Few reports of scheduling mishaps

When it comes to gastroenterology and hepatology, you simply can’t go wrong with Arizona Digestive Health.

This widely-recognized facility was founded in 2007 in an effort to bring together the most respected names in the Arizona gastroenterology community.

Among them is Dr. John Wells, a highly-recommended gastroenterologist for many good reasons.

For starters, he’s certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Internal Medicine.

It goes without saying that he specializes in a wide scope of treatments, particularly in colonoscopies.

What really stands out to us is his excellent reputation among his patients. Apparently, he’s extremely easy to work with as he’s both knowledgeable and compassionate.

Patients also love that he speaks to them in a manner that’s easy to understand. Nothing gets lost in translation; he takes his time discussing all possible courses of treatment to find which one the patient is most comfortable with.

We also appreciate that he accepts most insurance providers. This is especially helpful as his service fee is relatively higher than most.

An area they could probably work on, however, would be to have a better scheduling system in place. It appears that some patients had to wait longer even though they had confirmed appointments.

Pros

  • Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology and Hepatology
  • Well-experienced and has been practicing since 1997
  • Organized and efficient scheduling system

Cons

  • Premium rate for his services
  • Schedule gets booked up quite quickly

Another top-rated physician from Arizona Digestive Health is Dr. Mark Gulinson. He’s certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology & Hepatology and has been practicing since 1997.

It’s one thing to find a great doctor, and it’s another to find one that truly advocates for their patients. And from what we’ve heard, Dr. Gulinson has both of those nailed down.

His patients speak highly of him because his expertise and professionalism makes them feel as though they’re in good hands. He’s amiable, kind, and incredibly friendly, too.

In our book, it’s a big deal to receive these compliments. So, we give him major props for that.

The same can be said about his staff members. We’ve heard that they maintain an organized and efficient system that keeps patients in check.

Apparently, it’s rare to be kept waiting in their reception area. And when you are asked to wait, they’re apologetic about it and ensures that you’re comfortable.

It’s common for clinics to have drawbacks in setting appointments, so we’re glad to know that this isn’t an issue for them.

It’s probably for these reasons why patients don’t mind paying a premium for Dr. Gulinson’s service. He gets booked up pretty fast, too, so just make sure to call at least days or even a week ahead.

Pros

  • Board-certified in Gastroenterology and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Specializes in Endoscopy, Colorectal Cancer Screening and Prevention, and Capsule Endoscopy
  • Takes a collaborative approach when it comes to deciding on a course of treatment

Cons

  • Relatively shorter list of accepted insurance providers
  • Few reports of patients needing to do several follow-up calls

Serving over 70,000 patients every year, Arizona Centers for Digestive Health has solidified its place in the valley as a leading provider in gastrointestinal care.

Fairly young, they were founded just in 2017 by a group of former Mayo Clinic physicians. However, their years of combined experience is a testament to their expertise.

One of them is Dr. Kandarp Patel, a board-certified gastroenterologist that has been practicing for over a decade. On top of that, he has a master’s degree in physiology and biophysics, and is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.

Endoscopy, Colorectal Cancer Screening and Prevention, and Capsule Endoscopy are among his areas of expertise.

What we like about him is his warm and welcoming demeanor. His patients appreciate the collaborative approach that he takes with them.

It seems that he’s incredibly empathetic and really listens to what his patients have to say. Afterwhich, he will discuss the best possible options and will take his time answering queries and concerns.

While he accepts major insurance providers, the list is not as extensive as others. Make sure to check with them first.

Also, we have heard a few reports that some patients had to do several follow-up calls for appointments and concerns. We hope they address this, as it’s not a good look for a clinic to have a slow response rate.

Pros

  • Has been practicing since 2008
  • A Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology
  • Known to have exceptional bedside manners

Cons

  • Few reports of patient schedule mishaps
  • Inconsistent in response rates

Dr. Liz Cruz opened her own practice in 2008. Since then, she has been providing a full range of gastroenterology services for both inpatients and outpatients.

She’s a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology.

She also maintains her membership at the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Liz is loved by her patients for her sincerity and kind demeanor. From what we’ve heard, she’s incredibly sensitive to their health issues and goes above and beyond to help resolve them.

It’s also been said that she’s proactive and attentive anytime one of her patients has a concern. Because of this, patients feel comfortable around her.

When it comes to her staff members, they have also been pointed out to be helpful and polite. Even though there are complaints about schedules getting mixed up, they’re quick to find solutions and are apologetic about it.

Another issue we’ve heard is their inconsistencies in returning calls. Sometimes they’re able to respond quickly, but there are also other times when the patient has to do several follow-up calls.

While these may be minor issues to someone, we see these as areas which they can improve upon since they’re already exceptional in patient care.

Pros

  • Premier and state-of-the-art facility
  • Certified in general and advanced gastroenterology procedures
  • A Diplomate of the American College of Internal Medicine and American Board of Gastroenterology

Cons

  • Reception and phone service reps can be difficult to get ahold of
  • Reports of delayed appointments

AZ West Endoscopy is a premiere and free-standing endoscopic ambulatory surgery facility that has been in business since 2011.

Here, patient experience was given much thought. Its state-of-the-art facilities were designed to provide utmost convenience and comfort to its visitors.

Its medical director, Dr. Hector Rodriguez, can be credited for their success and good reputation.

Dr. Rodriguez is certified in general and advanced gastroenterology procedures. On top of that, he received special training in liver transplants, liver diseases, and pancreatobiliary disorders.

He is also a Diplomate of the American College of Internal Medicine and American Board of Gastroenterology.

What we like about him, though, is his personality. He is personable, friendly, and has a great sense of humor which patients find to be endearing.

However, make no mistake as he’s also brilliant and demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal issues. He’s often referred to be straightforward, but empathetic.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be exactly said for his staff members. We’ve heard of several complaints of booking difficulties since they’re not great at responding to phone calls.

Because of this, appointments get delayed and even insurance providers apparently have difficulties reaching them.

So, even though he has a great reputation among patients, we still think they should put equal importance on customer service and address these issues right away.
